Cialis is a trade name for popular Erectile Dysfunction (ED) drug Tadalafil. The drug was formally approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction or male impotence in 2003 by the US Federal Drug Administration. However, the discovery of Cialis dates back to 1994 when Sildenafil was accidentally discovered. A team of scientists from Pfizer were conducting clinical trials for Tadalafil in the hope of developing a heart medication, but noticed something interesting about the subjects. The participating male subjects experienced unexplained erection.

This development forced the researchers working on Tadalafil to focus their attention on developing PDE5 inhibiting drug, Viagra (Sildenafil). Cialis was jointly developed by Eli Lily and Company alongside ICOS Corporation. The ED drug is marketed as an improved form of Viagra, thanks to its heightened half-life of 17 hours compared to Viagra’s 4 hours. The other popular drug that falls in the same category is Levitra (Vardenafil). Cialis is classified as Phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors or PDE-5 drug designed to improve erectile dysfunction symptoms.

Class PDE5 drugs also help increase the amount of blood flowing to the penis. The intensity of blood flow plays a critical role in causing excitement and erection when a man is sexually aroused. During the arousal stages, the nervous system releases Nitric Oxide (NO) that encourages the production of a messaging substrate called cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). cGMP has the ability to relax muscles in the prostate and bladder, which helps control the contraction and dilation of the blood vessels entering and leaving the penis.

When analyzing the philosophy of erection, the enzyme PDE5 usually hydrolyses cGMP back into inactive guanosine monophosphate (GMP) state. Tadalafil or Cialis works by stopping PDE5 from inactivating cGMP, which gives rise to prolonged erection. The erection happens when blood is trapped in the penis. It is instructive to note that Tadalafil is strictly an ED drug and doesn’t provide protection against sexually transmitted diseases such as Hepatitis B, chlamydia, syphilis, Human Papillomavirus HPV and Human Immunodeficiency Syndrome (HIV).

Who needs Cialis?

Cialis is an ED drug approved for use by adults age 18 and above. Erectile dysfunction is a common condition that occurs when a man experiences problems trying to achieve and maintain an erection. The condition is common among men in the middle ages and those who are older. Besides erectile dysfunction, Cialis can also be used to treat a host of blood conditions, including Benign Prostatic Hypertension (BPH) and pulmonary arterial hypertension. The latter is treated using a form of Cialis that trades under the Adcirca brand name.

In spite of the pharmacological semblance, Cialis and Adcirca cannot be used interchangeably due to safety reasons. Benign prostatic hyperplasia is a serious condition that causes the prostate gland to enlarge thereby causing urination difficulties. Cialis is sold in four different dosages; 2.5mg, 5mg, 10mg and 20mg. However, the recommended starting dose is 10mg tablet. This initial dose is suitable for men experiencing erection difficulties induced by stress or anxiety. If the dosage is ineffective, the doctor may recommend the higher 20mg tablet.

The Cialis 10mg and 20mg are usually effective for about 36 hours. Small dosages like 2.5mg and 5mg are generally safe to take daily, but this will depend on your medical condition and the doctor’s prescription. The effects of the drug normally kick start about 30 minutes after use. Cialis can be taken orally in the form of a plain tablet before or after meals. The doctor usually decides the right dosage based on critical factors like the patient’s age, medical history, the acuteness of the impotency and potential drug interactions among other ascribed reasons.

The effectiveness of the medication may vary from one person to the other. If you skip a dose, you can always take it when the next opportunity arrives. Taking a double dose to compensate for the lost time is strictly prohibited as this could possibly lead to serious side effects. If you have had a Cialis overdose or are experiencing unexpected side effects call 911 immediately. Alternatively, you can call the poison control center nearest to you for quick medical attention and professional guidance. The Cialis tablet should be swallowed whole and not broken.

For proper upkeep, the drug should be stored under room temperature between (15C/59F to 30C/86F), away from heat and enervating moisture. The drugs should also be kept away from children and pet. If you have expired drugs and don’t know how to dispose them off, simply speak to your local pharmacist. Always take time to read the fine print enclosed in your package for more clarity. People with heart conditions should consult a doctor before taking Cialis. Remember, Cialis like all the other medications has potential for adverse effects.

Cialis and alcohol

Many people who enjoy drinking drink are usually worried whether taking prescription Cialis with alcohol could be detrimental to their health. It is important to recognize that excessive alcohol drinking is one of the factors attributed to ED. Doctors believe taking too much alcohol can cause significant damage to the blood vessels and curtail the amount of blood flowing into the penis. The consequences can impede a man’s ability to achieve and sustain an erection. Alcohol is also known to cause transient loss of blood pressure, which can lead to dizziness and fainting.

Research indicates that taking too much alcohol with Cialis can lead to orthostatic hypotension. The condition can lead to vertigo, accidents and body injuries. Taking Cialis with alcohol can also cause hypotension (low blood pressure) and severe heart problems because Cialis and alcohol normally act as vasodilators that cause the blood vessels to relax. In certain rare cases, taking Cialis and excessive alcohol may cause vision changes and lasting, painful erection. The other common side effects include muscle aches, stomach pain and runny or stuffy nose.

For your personal health and safety, no alcohol or modest drinking is preferred when taking Cialis. However, most medics vouch for modest drinking. The term broadly means taking less than 3 drinks a day. While doing so, you need to remember that alcohol content varies across various drinks. Beer and wines generally contain more ounce of alcohol compared to the standard liquor. If you have a serious drinking problem, you are strongly advised to visit a counselor. The counselor will check analyze the addiction and offer ways to help.

Besides alcohol, Cialis should not be taken with grapefruit juice because the intoxicating mix can cause several undesirable effects. Studies show mixing alcohol with grapefruit can raise the blood levels and interact with certain medications. The interaction includes affecting the performance of Tadalafil. For better outcome, let your doctor know if you are taking grapefruit or other medications, be they herbs or vitamins. Proper medical assessment will help the doctor know the ramifications of the drugs you are using while ensuring the efficacy of Cialis.

Possible side effects

Cialis is generally a safe and effective drug for the treatment of ED and related conditions. The most common side effects of taking Tadalafil include: hearing loss, stuffy nose, facial flushing, headache, reduced blood pressure and increased risk of getting malignant melanoma, a type of skin cancer. Cialis should not be used alongside nitrate medications as this can lead to potentially fatal hypotension. Common nitrate medications include: erythromycin, nitroglycerin and cimetidine. The other drugs with potential for interacting with Cialis include Alpha blockers and azole antifungals like ketoconazole and itraconazole

People with the following health conditions should consult a doctor before taking Cialis:

  • Liver disease – the condition may cause Cialis to mount inside the body and cause health problems. The doctor may prescribe low doses of Cialis as a cautionary measure.
  • Kidney disease – the condition can cause the kidney to operate less optimally. As part of remediation, the doctor will not recommend the daily use of on-demand Cialis.
  • • Heart conditions such as arrhythmia, myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure and angina (chest pain)
  • • Low blood pressure and high blood pressure
  • • Blood disorders such as leukemia, multiple myeloma, sickle cell anemia and hemophilia

Note: Men with conditions that cause structurally deformed penis like cavernorsal fibrosis and angulation may need special monitoring by a medical expert. If you notice any of the symptoms, you need to stop taking Cialis immediately to more serious side effect.

  • Allergic reaction (rash, swollen lips)
  • • Chest pain and irregular heartbeat accompanied by shortness of breath during sex
  • • Transitory loss of memory
  • • Partial and total loss of vision – although the condition is rare, it can occur if the you are suffering from eye problems, diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. People who smoke and those above age 50 may also be susceptible.
  • • Painful and inappropriate erection lasting over 4 hours (priapism) - this is a serious condition that requires critical care. If the condition is not treated on time, priapism can cause continued loss of erection and permanent tissue damage.
